Ellen Davis Trail Saturday 11/20/2021

Sign up! With winter snows coming to the mountains Chinook Trail Association will be having work parties in Vancouver.
We will meet Saturday November 20th at about 8:30 and work from 9 to 1. This work party is subject to weather but some rain won’t stop us!
This spring we had a work party cutting blackberries on the Ellen Davis Trail. This summer someone, I’m guessing BPA, had all the blackberries cut down on the west side of that same portion of the Ellen Davis trail.
This presents an opportunity to grub out the blackberry crowns in that area and stop them from growing back which will reduce future maintenance. I also have extra daffodil bulbs that we can plant and provide a spring surprise to the trail users.
We have grubbing tools, shovels, and loppers.
You’ll need good boots and good gloves for the blackberries along with raingear and warm clothing. We will be parking near the worksite and we will be hauling the blackberry debris out to the main road for later pickup by the City of Vancouver.
Email sjones@chinooktrails.org to signup and get the details.

CTA work party on Bells Mountain Trail Friday 10/22/2021

The weather looks okay for a work party on Friday,10/22.
We plan to work on the Bells Mountain Trail from the Cold Creek Day use and brush towards Bells Mountain.
There are places where the salmon berry is leaning into the trail and it will be good to get it out of the way for the rainy season. If we get enough volunteers then we may do some minor tread work too.
We will plan to work 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
What do volunteers need to bring?
A sturdy pair of boots (no tennis shoes!), long pants and work gloves. It’s recommended that you wear a long-sleeve shirt and eye protection (such as glasses, sunglasses or safety glasses) too. Don’t forget to bring rain gear, extra warm clothing, and water in a pack. Bring your lunch and snacks. Gaiters can be a big help when you’re moving dirt off the trail.
Please email Steve Jones at volunteer@chinooktrails.org to sign up and get details. Registration deadline is Thursday at noon.

Cold Creek Work Party 10/12/2019

Cold Creek – Lower Loop Day Use Area

Events

Date/Time
Date(s) – 10/12/2019
8:30 am – 1:00 pm

We will have motorized totes to transport the gravel from the parking lot. If there is time, the Bells Mountain Trail heading towards the Yacolt Burn Trailhead (east) needs a little brushing and grading.

Chinook Trail Association has all the tools needed and we will have a safety talk before beginning work. Coffee and doughnuts will be available before we start. We will work until about 1:00 pm and we will have some drinks afterwards. Please bring some snacks

Please come properly prepared with a sturdy pair of boots (no tennis shoes!), long pants and work gloves. It’s recommended that you wear a long-sleeve shirt and eye protection (such as glasses, sunglasses or safety glasses) too. Don’t forget to bring rain gear, extra warm clothing, and water in a pack. Gaiters can be a big help when you’re moving dirt or gravel.

Grassy Knoll Work Party 8/12/2021 – Canceled

I’m planning to lead a work party from the Grassy Knoll Trailhead on Thursday August 12th.
I’m guessing I’ll get about 4 people. I’ll report back with who attended and our hours.
We’re planning on just brushing. I plan to try out an electric hedge trimmer.
There were no deadfalls on the trail from the trailhead to the PCT when I scouted it 2 weeks ago. Also no deadfall on the short trail up to Big Huckleberry Mountain.
Let me know if there are any issues with that date, otherwise you can file this email.
Have a most pleasant day.

Sign up for a 2 day, 1 night work party on the Bluff Mountain Trail Thu Jun 17, 2021 8:30 AM — Fri Jun 18, 2021 3:30 PM.
WTA members will be on this work party too. The trail needs brushing and some tread work.

You will hike in with your tools and all your camping gear and spend the night near Bluff Mountain near where the work to be done is. Consider it a mini backcountry trip with a chance to camp somewhere new!

About the Area
The Silver Star Scenic Area is the southeasternmost corner of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The Yacolt Burn was the state’s largest wildfire that swept across these ridges over 100 years ago. Its legacy remains in open meadows and talus fields devoid of large trees. Sweeping views, amazing wildflowers and beautiful colors make this a hikers favorite.

Contact Steve Jones at sjones@chinooktrails.org to sign up and get additional details!
